Definitely one of my top five planes of all time, the Lockheed SR-71 "Blackbird", the initial idea was conceived in the very late 50's, that's right youngens, the 50's, by the hot rodder of the military aviation industry, Kelly Johnson, and his twisted team at the epically super secret 'Skunkworks' . . . . it was up and flying 'fairly fast' [Mach III plus] by late in 1963, I'm pretty sure the speed records are still in tact, and it continued in service until the late nineties.
A titanium body, to withstand the temps generated at the speed this beast was capable of on a sustained basis, that leaked gas like a sieve until the panels heated up and expanded, was just one of thousands of technological firsts this plane gave to avionics and aeronautics. The Yanks had to bullshit the Ruskies that all the titanium they required to build the thirty odd things was going to be used to make spoons or bedpans for the Hollywood elite to avoid raising their suspicions . . . .
I know, this is just a model, but who the fuck can afford a real one, and besides, there's oodles of miles of footage on the genuine, erection inducing, full size, 1:1 version . . . . however, there are fuck all, insanely detailed, fully flying, JET POWERED, radio controlled model Blackbirds just blobbing about in every suburban garage . . . . and that's why it's here, the whole shebang is clearly the brainchild of a bloke, German I believe, who has slipped his moorings and slid off into the ether of a parallel universe . . . . so please, even if you generally think model planes are for geeky man-boy accountant types, loosen the fuck up and check this shit out . . . . THIS IS VERY COOL !!!!
