BIG DADDY ROTH AND THE "JUNKYARD" FIASCO . . . SCREWED OVER BY NICK THE STRIPPER FROM THE LAND OF OZ . . . POOR OLD ED HAD NOT HEARD WHAT THE BAND SOUNDED LIKE . . . AND WHEN HE DID . . . NOT A HAPPY RAT FINK !!!

DURING THE MID LATE SIXTIES, THE CREATOR OF SO MUCH COOL SHIT WITHIN THE COUNTER CULTURE OF BIKES, RODS AND ART DURING THAT PERIOD AND EARLIER, ED "BIG DADDY" ROTH, DID A DEAL TO SELL HIS WARES DOWNUNDER . . . TO TRUNCATE A LONG AND SORDID STORY, HE ENDED UP BEING ROYALLY JABBED IN THE S'FINK'TER, [GET IT ??] . . . AND THE DEAL LEFT A SOUR TASTE IN HIS MOUTH FOR A DECADE AND MORE . . . WHO COULD BLAME THE CAT ???

Again, without getting bogged down in the fine points, forward to 1981/82 and Nick Cave and the joy and smack filled chaps from The Birthday Party are recording "Junkyard" and in need of some cover art . . . I'm thinking that Mr Cave was a fan and succeeded, in cahoots with smooth talking management, in convincing Big Daddy that it was a great opportunity to connect with a new audience and there would be no repeat of his previous experience of Aussie business dealings, blah, blah, fucking blah . . . .

Only one problem, at no point was Ed given the chance to listen to messers Cave, Pew, Howard and Harvey et al doing what was back then, some seriously tortured musical meanderings . . . even worse for the one time fully loose Roth, was he was now a born again Christian . . . given one of the key tracks on the album was titled "Big Jesus Trash Can" . . . it was all too much for poor old Ed . . . he spat the dummy, shat the bed, wigged out and turned himself into one of his iconic cartoon monsters  . . . . and swore off having anything ever again to do with Australians . . .

THAT'S IT FOLKS, THERE IS BOUND TO BE MORE IN DEPTH COVERAGE OF "ROTHGATE" FOR YOU TO SUCK UP SOMEWHERE ON THE INTERLOADNETPANTS THINGY IF YOU WISH TO SEEK IT OUT, BUT FOR NOW, SATISFY YOUR URGES WITH A PEEK AT THE FOCUS OF THE BIG DADDY DEBACLE BY CLICKING ONLY ON THE POST TITLE . . . A CRACKING ALBUM COVER . . "JUNKYARD"

 . . . . . . . LIFE SURE IS A FUNNY GAME . . . "BIG JESUS TRASH CAN" . . . . . HA HA HA, LOVE IT, ABSOFUCKINGLUTELY LOVE IT JUST AS MUCH AS I DID THEN !!!!

  1. ey up youth, roth really was a giant of an artist and sadly under-rated apart from the 'usual suspect's' of the hot-rod, custom biker, freek-nik and alternative 6'ties culture-vultures, a couple of year's ago i visited the petersen museum in los angeles and lo and behold they were selling genuine roth items in the museum shop, i tried to persuade mr's b to purchase an original sportster sticker for me but she was having none of it, 'you drag me and the kid's half way around the world and we spend our holiday looking at car's in a bloody museum and you want to spend thirty quid on a bloody sticker?...... tosser!'
