I HAVE ALWAYS HAD A PENCHANT FOR ALLOY ENGINE COVERS AND COMPONENTS WITH FINS, IN FACT, ANYTHING REALLY, PUT SOME FINS ON A TOOTHBRUSH AND I'M BARRING UP ALL OVER THE SHOP . . . . . . NOT ONLY DO THEY HARK BACK TO THE FULL GLORY DAYS OF POST WAR, EARLY FIFTIES HOT ROD/INDY/MIDGET/LAND SPEED ENDEAVOURS AS A STYLISTIC REFERENCE POINT . . . THEY ACTUALLY HAVE A TRULY SIGNIFICANT AND BENEFICIAL EFFECT ON THE MOTOR THEY ARE ATTACHED TO.
Some of you are aware I've added a Speed Merchant finned derby cover to my Skirtster, the shit looks the business, but more importantly, it does a great job of disapating heat away from the internals of the clutch basket assembly and that's a good thing. I'm not a mechanic's arsehole but I've listened with all three ears open for the last thirty years to blokes that really 'know stuff', and reducing heat build up in a any motor reduces component fatigue, ipso facto, the propensity for your infernally combusting pride and joy to detonate all over the road, your leg and your wallet.
Now, Irish Rich and others of that level of mechanical wizardry may correct me if I'm off beam on this, but when I saw Josh's fabulously functional finned shovel head rocker covers on his Throwback site, my second thought, after 'fuck me they are the duck's nuts', was, 'that's gotta be a good thing for the top end of the donk' and I reckon I'm right . . . if you can draw more heat away from those little valves, rocker arms, guides, gaskets, studs etc, chances are you stand a better chance of prolonging the life expectancy of your motor and its reliability . . . . crew like Miller, Offenhauser, Webco, Magnusson and the like weren't running this kind of shit just cause it looked pretty, they worked, and nothing under this sun has changed in seventy years, once more, FORM FOLLOWS FUNCTION !!
For what it's worth, if you're ever considering polishing your crank cases to the point of obliterating all the thousands of tiny casting marks . . . unless it's gonna be another trailor queen, resist the temptation . . . all those 'unsightly' little bumps increase surface area thereby raising its ability to keep relatively cool . . . but what the fuck do I know . . . ????
So, if you're on the prowl for some fucking exquisite, hand produced, made in the U.S of A rocker covers for your shovel, or equally wonderful risers in brass and billet aluminium, get onto Josh Frazzita at THROWBACK MC PARTS and have a serious perve at his fantastic work . . . . you will not be disappointed in the least . . . .
***** Big thanks to the Shamrock Man at APPLIED MACHETE for the tipoff . . . good to see him back on line, now, to visit THROWBACK, hit the link below or on post title and give yourself a nice little rise . . . as it were.
