'THE CHURCH' . . . "WHEN YOU WERE MINE" . . . . ONE OF AUSSIE'S GREATEST BANDS FROM THE EARLY EIGHTIES THROUGH TO RIGHT NOW . . . . MOODY, SOARING, POETIC AND POWERFULLY MELODIC . . . . SHOULDA BEEN SO MUCH BIGGER ON MUSIC ALONE BUT MESSERS KILBY, PLOOG, WILSON-PIPER AND KOPPES DIDN'T PLAY THE CORPORATE GAME IN THE STATES OR THE U.K . . . . NOT EVEN HERE IN AUSTRALIA COME TO THINK OF IT . . . .

I ONCE SAW THE ENTIRETY OF A PACKED 'BOMBAY ROCK' . . . . THAT'S 2000 PUNTERS FOLKS . . . . SIT ON THEIR ARSES, CHILL THE FUCK OUT AND WATCH AND LISTEN TO THESE GUYS BEWITCH EVERYONE IN THE ROOM . . . . EVEN IF YOU WEREN'T OUT OF IT OR PISSED THAT'S THE EFFECT THEIR MUSIC COULD HAVE ON YOU . . . .

"When You Were Mine" features an incredible and deeply layered build-up over some 32 odd bars, I'm takin a wild guess there . . . . before launching into the vocal line where Steve Kilby proceeds to spin his dark, silkily malevolent, sing every fucking thing in A, storyline. The guitar interplay between Wilson-Piper and Koppes is extraordinary and the rhythm section hook up of Kilby on bass and Richard Ploog on drums is rock solid yet fluid and simple . . . . this tune has been in my top ten since 1981 and will likely remain there until I croak.

I hope you all can get the rush from it that it gives me . . . . I'd like to send it out to Nicke the Hipster at 'Rigid Hips' H.Q . . . . as I learned this evening, the guy is seriously into his music . . . Marty Wilson-Piper was married to a Swedish gal and used to reside in Sweden for extended periods of time . . . . likely adding to the inability of the band to really optimise opportunities . . . . but, fuck that shit, you gotta do what you "feel" is right . . . . you're making music, not selling donuts.

***** Usual procedure, click below link or post title and dig it, The Church with "When You Were Mine" . . . . thanks to 'Ciaofons' for putting it up on PooTube . . . .
