"PSYCHO" THE BEASTS OF BOURBON 1984, FROM THE EPIC SWAMP/COUNTRY ALBUM 'THE AXEMAN'S JAZZ' . . . . AUSSIE'S FIRST POST PUNK, ALTERNATE 'SUPER GROUP' . . . . COMPRISING MEMBERS OF THE JOHNNY'S, THE SCIENTISTS, THE HOODOO GURU'S AND TEX DEADLY AND THE DUM DUMS . . . . IMPRESSIVELY COMPELLING DARK AND DISTURBING . . . . NATURALLY, I LOVED IT.

RECORDED OVER ONE TWENTY FOUR HOUR PERIOD WITH ENGINEER GENIUS TONY COHEN TWIDDLING NOBS, THIS LANDMARK DISC WAS STUFFED TO THE MAGGOT INFESTED EYEBALLS WITH TWANGY, TWISTED, COUNTRY INSPIRED SONGS REVOLVING AROUND DEATH, LOSS, TRAINS AND DESTRUCTION . . . .

TEX PERKINS ON LEAD VOCALS WAS THE LEAST WELL KNOWN OF UNDERGROUND LEGENDS SPENCER P JONES, JAMES BAKER, BORIS SUDJOVIC AND KIM SALMON, BUT ASSUMED TOTAL CONTROL WITH HIS MALEVOLENT, MENACING APPROACH TO HIS ROLE, PARTICULARLY ON THIS CLASSIC LEON PAYNE DITTY "PSYCHO" . . . .

DARK AND MENACING, HE TELLS THE TALE BEAUTIFULLY AND WOULD SOON GO ON TO FOLKLORIC STATUS HIMSELF WITH THE BEASTS AND THE CRUEL SEA.

You can take the following as gospel . . . . the last support my first band did with The Johnny's was just after 'The Axeman's Jazz' had been wrapped, Spencer was giving us the lowdown after the gig, it was done in one continuous session, 24 hours straight . . . . or bent, as the case may be.

In typical and classic rock and roll excess style, by completion, Tex, Spencer and James were literally carried out of the studio . . . . all with a massive case of way too much of everything, you can feel it when listening to the album, but, not unlike Keef on 'Exile on Main Street', it only adds to the brilliance of the final sound . . . .

Sometimes, nothing succeeds quite like total and over the top excess . . . . dig this killer version of "Psycho" by The Beasts of Bourbon . . . . then go out and get the album !!!
