THINKIN ABOUT DR FEELGOOD AND WILKO JOHNSON LEAD MY MIND INSTANTLY TO A GEEZER WHO HAS ALWAYS BEEN VERY CLOSE TO MY MUSICAL HEART . . . HE TOOK THE HIGH ROAD STRAIGHT OUT OF KILBURN AND PRODUCED SOME OF THE CATCHIEST, SUPER FUNKY, QUIRKY, GROOVE DRENCHED POP TO COME OUT OF THE ENTIRE POST PUNK, 'NEW WAVE' ERA . . . IAN DURY, WITH AND WITHOUT THE FABULOUS BLOCKHEADS !!!
How can you possibly not like someone who, afflicted by polio as a child and with withered arm and shuffling gait, writes a tune called "Spasticus Autisticus" as a protest about something that now escapes me [damn !!], gets slammed by all the social do gooders, banned by the Beeb [BBC], then, politely tells them all to stick it up their arses I'll write what I want ???
How can you not be totally moved by a bloke who can articulate the following line " . . . slap, bang, tickle, the Vincent motorsickle" and then work it into a fucking cracker song ??? One of my very favourite Dury lines comes from the tune I've featured here, the oh so 'Morning Glory' inducing, "Wake Up and Make Love" . . . . "I come awake in a horny morning mood, you're still asleep, in the naughty, naked nyude", [he pronounces 'nude' as 'nyude'], what bloke could not possibly relate to that universal observation ???
Here's a handful of classics from the bard himself that are easily found for those unfamiliar with Ian Dury's musical genius - "What a Waste", "Sex and Drugs and Rock and Roll", "Reasons to be Cheerful part III", "Sweet Gene Vincent", "Hit Me with Your Rhythm Stick", "There ain't 'alf been some Clever Bastards", "I wanna be Straight" and the bitingly scathing "Spasticus Autisticus".
DURY WAS A DEEPLY TALENTED AND UNIQUE INDIVIDUAL, INTELLECTUALLY AND MUSICALLY, A POET, SONGWRITER, ACTOR AND CHAMPION OF THE COMMON MAN, I ABSOLUTELY LOVED THE GUY, HIS MUSIC STILL LIFTS ME ABOVE THE TURGID MIASMA OF EXISTENCE AND BRINGS A HUGE, SHITEATING GRIN TO MY DIAL AND I FIGURE IT ALWAYS WILL . . . . " . . .
