IAN DURY AND THE BLOCKHEADS - "WAKE UP AND MAKE LOVE" FROM 'NEW BOOTS AND PANTIES' - STRAIGHT OUTTA LONDON, THE OSCAR WILD OF ROCK AND ROLL, . . . . WHO SAID WHITE BOYS CAN'T GET FUNKY ?? YouTube

*THIS ONE'S FOR "LOVELESS" . . . . THERE ARE THOSE WHO CALL HIM . . . . TIM.

THINKIN ABOUT DR FEELGOOD AND WILKO JOHNSON LEAD MY MIND INSTANTLY TO A GEEZER WHO HAS ALWAYS BEEN VERY CLOSE TO MY MUSICAL HEART . . . HE TOOK THE HIGH ROAD STRAIGHT OUT OF KILBURN AND PRODUCED SOME OF THE CATCHIEST, SUPER FUNKY, QUIRKY, GROOVE DRENCHED POP TO COME OUT OF THE ENTIRE POST PUNK, 'NEW WAVE' ERA . . . IAN DURY, WITH AND WITHOUT THE FABULOUS BLOCKHEADS !!!

How can you possibly not like someone who, afflicted by polio as a child and with withered arm and shuffling gait, writes a tune called "Spasticus Autisticus" as a protest about something that now escapes me [damn !!], gets slammed by all the social do gooders, banned by the Beeb [BBC], then, politely tells them all to stick it up their arses I'll write what I want ???

How can you not be totally moved by a bloke who can articulate the following line " . . . slap, bang, tickle, the Vincent motorsickle" and then work it into a fucking cracker song ??? One of my very favourite Dury lines comes from the tune I've featured here, the oh so 'Morning Glory' inducing, "Wake Up and Make Love" . . . . "I come awake in a horny morning mood, you're still asleep, in the naughty, naked nyude", [he pronounces 'nude' as 'nyude'], what bloke could not possibly relate to that universal observation  ???

Here's a handful of classics from the bard himself that are easily found for those unfamiliar with Ian Dury's musical genius - "What a Waste", "Sex and Drugs and Rock and Roll", "Reasons to be Cheerful part III", "Sweet Gene Vincent", "Hit Me with Your Rhythm Stick", "There ain't 'alf been some Clever Bastards", "I wanna be Straight" and the bitingly scathing "Spasticus Autisticus".

DURY WAS A DEEPLY TALENTED AND UNIQUE INDIVIDUAL, INTELLECTUALLY AND MUSICALLY, A POET, SONGWRITER, ACTOR AND CHAMPION OF THE COMMON MAN, I ABSOLUTELY LOVED THE GUY, HIS MUSIC STILL LIFTS ME ABOVE THE TURGID MIASMA OF EXISTENCE AND BRINGS A HUGE, SHITEATING GRIN TO MY DIAL AND I FIGURE IT ALWAYS WILL . . . . " . . .

  1. 'wotcha whiteline, thank's for that mate, i had the pleasure of seeing ian dury and the blockheads on the 'new boot's and panties' tour, a very, very tight band of excellent musicians indeed, your post about canvey island's finest, dr. feelgood, was another blast from the past, i saw them at the old queen street swimming bath's in derby, basically, they just covered the gala pool with boarding, dismantled the diving board, built a low stage and robert's your mother's brother, the first gig i saw there was hawkwind in 1972, [complete with a certain mr kilminster, over the years i saw brian eno, [after he left roxy music], greenslade, the heavy metal kid's, the two-tone tour, 'the specials, the selector and madness, all on one bill!] and the mighty clash, [the 'give 'em enough rope tour'], the one band i did miss, [along with everyone else] was the sex pistols, derby's town council wanted to see a preview after the infamous sweary bill grundy live tv interview, [might be worth tracking down on the 'tube?, malcolm mclaren refused to play for the fine upstanding gentlemen of the city and that, was that, we lost our chance of seeing a legendary band at the height of their infamy, after that most gig's were [and still are] held at the civic assembly room's and again, i have seen a few legends there, but, that's for another time mate, i'm off to bed, keep yer tongue out and yer bowel's open, regards, loveless......

  2. Gidday Lovely, mate, the Dury post was a pleasure, glad it sparked the old memory file into those wonderful recollections, sounds like it was a great gig to see live bands, especially of the ilk mentioned, Never got to see Kilburn's finest son sadly but have always thought him an absolute first class poet/performer/social commentator, fucking magic !!! Man, stoked you added in the name I couldn't remember, Canvey Island !!!! Saw the Sick Pustules when they toured in the nineties, bloody brilliant, without the nominally talented Sid and Matlock back in place they were excellent and showed how great a set of real rock tunes they put out . . played for only fifty minutes . . . the Swindle continues but I was just laughing !!! As for Miss Biker Metric, having taken a quick squiz at his blog and attatched photo, I think the sweet young thing needs to harden the fuck up quick smart and in a hurry and stop taing herself so delicately, nice response too old bean !!! Love your work mate, you're no bleedin thickey . . . . . Whitelines.
